Childless professionals are growing increasingly resentful of working mothers and fathers, a study of women in the workplace has found. Two-thirds of young women who are not parents say they are expected to work longer hours than colleagues with children, according to the study of 25,000 women aged 28 to 40.
This apparent resentment is especially true in the private sector, where “tension” is growing between the two groups. The report discloses that most women believe having children could adversely affect their careers.
More than three-quarters of those surveyed admitted to feeling “nervous” about the impact of becoming mothers on their professional success.
Claire from Headway Recruitment in Bradford said
“A lot of senior women who have families work just as hard as those without children. It is often just the case that they don’t put in those hours in the office where they are visible.”
Almost half of the women surveyed believe colleagues resent people who work flexible hours. About 55% said that flexible workers were also more likely to be viewed as ‘less committed’.
In today’s society where you can check your work emails whilst sat at home watching television the boundaries between work and home life invariably get blurred. The result is often to the detriment of both family life and work productivity. From an employer’s perspective, it is the end result that is all important what work is produced and what do people add to the bottom line. For an employee it is about feeling valued and being recognised for the hard work that is put in, be that from their desk at 10.00am or replying to that customer query at 10.00pm.
