I love biography films. In summer 2019 I was fortunate enough to attend a live Q&A with Asif Kapadia the hugely talented director of the documentary Diego Maradona.
Before then I knew about Maradona's huge impact on the Argentina sides at the World Cup but not the story of him joining the club side Napoli. When he arrived in 1984 Napoli had just finished 12 of 16 in the Italian league. No team outside the north had ever won Serie A. They were a poor relation of the glamorous sides such as AC Milan and Juventus. By the time Maradona left they had won everything possible in Italian football including the European Cup.
He single-handedly dragged an average team to previously unimaginable glories.
The film is hugely compelling with incredible home cinema footage, of course, it showed his dark side too. The drugs, the links to the mafia. However, what stayed with me was Maradona’s incredible skill and speed. The solo goals, his flair, his drive, and his passion. It left a deep impression on me and made me realise the effect of one special person can never be underestimated.
